Tyler Perry brings Jesus to the movies: - (October, 2007)
Tyler Perry, an openly professed Christian is now one of Hollywood's top film directors when it comes to comedy and drama. Apart from his highly successful trade mark act, Madea he is also well known for encrypting faith into his script and his shameless use of the name "Jesus". In a TBN interview last week Tyler shared how he walked away from several major deals because they did not want "Jesus" mentioned in his script. Well Tyler's faith has certainly paid off at the box office last weekend with the release of his latest film "Why did I get married".
Despite many critiques and oppositions this film outshined all other releases including George Clooney's Michael Clayton, with a staggering $21 million gross. Although the title "Why did I get married" could be mistaken as pessimistic, Tyler claims that it is actually reflective, a story of four married couples who get together to remind themselves why they got married.
Tyler said this has definitely been his best work yet. Amidst the drama leading up to the big release Tyler stated that it was when he finally got the opportunity to sit down with audiences and see the impact the film had on a personal level that he really felt the reward of his work. He stated on his personal message board… "As I looked at the faces of the people in this theatre laughing and crying I got it! I had a feeling that this movie was special, but I didn't know how special. I could literally see husbands and wives coming together. I could see people letting go of past hurts. And I could feel forgiveness in the air."
Tyler is definitely paving a way for Christian's in Hollywood to be overt about their faith. Audiences are the ones with the power and they are choosing to endorse material that speaks to them on a personal level. The message of hope is certainly one that never gets old.
