Interview With Hiss Majesty Sound System

His Majesty Sound System (HMSS) is a London based ministry. It boasts a hot cocktail of
impressive technology with a set up comprising of ………………8x RX18 Scoop bins loaded
with Precision Device 1850's 18" playing sub bass, 60Hz down to about 28Hz, above which
are 4x BS1200 boxes each containing 2x Precision Device 1550 15" playing 60Hz - 100Hz,
then the top boxes each contain 2x PD 121 12" drivers playing mid 100Hz to about 3.5KHz,
and JBL compression drivers playing Tops 3.5KHz - 18KHz. They have six (6) of these boxes.
With a further 2x Crest 8001 running stereo driving the sub, and 2x EVp3000 driving the bass,
Crest CA6 driving mids and a behringer EP2500 on tops. They also use Klark Teknik
equalisers and Alto speak. …………….All this is enough to grab the attention of male
audiences, whilst leaving many females saying "WHAT"!!! So C.A.I. has Positive from
HMSS to give us more insite.

What exactly does all this technology mean Positive? My guess is a powerful impact on
very large crowds?

Yes, this is true.  The man who had the vision to start HMSS and still at the helm today –
Redbeard - is an expert on these things after spending many years in the dance hall and
sound system arena before turning his life over to Christ. Since then he and other brothers
with similar experience have brought this to the gospel reggae scene.  When we play out
the sound is very powerful - up there with the best in the business.

What is the vision behind HMSS?

The vision is to bring the undiluted gospel of Christ to the dancehall. To uplift the true Majesty
of Jesus and honour Him.  Also, to do this with excellence and reach people who appreciate
this culture.

How did HMSS start? Did you have such an impressive set up in the beginning?

HMSS started with a few visionairy brothers that were connected via Urban Mission - a
ministry that falls under Calvary Chapel South London.  The set up was small but the vision
was BIG from the start. The name always invoked a big ship - like an ark saving the people.

What kind of events does HMSS cater for?

Regularly HMSS cater for various Christian events, parties etc.  This remains important and
a blessing to the people.  However, when the sound really comes into its own is at the big
dancehall events. We are also known for presence at Notting Hill carnival God Corner every
year.

When HMSS plays, on average how large are the crowds?

Hard to say since we participate in such different events but perhaps between 100 - 200 on
average.

Apart from Reggae and Dancehall does HMSS endorse other forms or urban music such as
soca, Jazz, Hip-Hop and R&B?

We endorse any music that truly honours the LORD and uplifts Jesus Christ. Sometimes
we play music of those styles depending on the event.  We specialise in righteous Reggae
though. A lot of what we play are custom made dub plates by artists we are linked with, so
this will tend to be 90% of what we play at least in a dance hall event.

How big is Christian Caribbean music in the UK?

Perhaps bigger than people think. It's getting bigger as well.  We have a part to play
in this and also others like Shekina Sound Ministries and artists like Gamma, Sherine,
Dennis McLean and Jahaziel.

I understand that HMSS also has a Radio Show. Can you tell us a little more about this
and the other forms of ministry HMSS is involved in?

The radio show is on www.gforceradio.com every Saturday 10.00 - 12.00 GMT.  It is
hosted by Marky G. The music is a mix of dub plates, new tunes and classic reggae
gospel tracks, all laced with the particular flavour of HMSS. HMSS and its members
are also involved in other ministry as part of Urban Mission mainly - all focussed on
showing people the way to Christ through the media of urban style cultural expressions.

Currently there is a worldwide recession taking place which is already having an
impact on the UK economy. Has this affected your ministry? If yes, in what ways?

No, not really.  Hopefully it will make people focus on seeking God in their lives,
realising that we cannot rely on material things.  But it's true that some of our
audience will feel the pinch.  Maybe we can be a blessing to brighten up harder days.

What can we look forward to see from HMSS ministry in 2009?

More radio, more outreach, more ministry - basically "no retreat, no surrender".
